  2. The movie "The Great Debaters"I believe is a movie that we can relate to. In comparison to our Belizean society we can clearly see how been different will determined how far we will go in our county. Where people are fighting for equality, respect and freedomd. In comparisson also to College English 11 shows how in the classroom we as students participate in oral discussion where we can voice our opinions and be able to back it up with proof. Where we interact with one other learning from each other.

  3. The Great Debaters is related to college English II in the way we communicate, particpate, demonstrate and share our opinions with each other inspite of our differnt ethnic background and cultures. It also relates to our Belizean Society in a similair way how the blacks are been look upon as "unintelligent" people.Always fighting to get justice and respect. always down sizing us, with all the discrimination and racism in our society.

  4. The movie "the great debaters" relates a lot to English class by the way of speaking, and the way we think of others, especially the onces not of our kind. Some think they are superior than others. We as Belizeans tend to discriminate people and take into consideration their race and cultures. The movie relates to Belizean society because some people fight and want everything.

  5. well the movie " The Great Debaters" has a lot in common with our English class an our Belizean society as we have a lot of young people fighting to earn an education an have their voice heard in our society with out being victimize by those in higher authority who feel they have the right to beat down on others due to race, color of their skin, and the sir name that they carry. also in our English class we try to communicate with each other and share our different opinion to learn and appreciate each other.

  6. The movie, "The Great Debaters", relate to college English, in the way that we must learn to be good writers, good vocalist, and to be able to express ourselves in a mannerly way but at the same time, be respectful and respected. The movie would relate to the Belizean society also because now that colored people have gained the equal rights and treatments, they have forgotten their roots, and go about doing the same to others of others culture or even financial status. Our society needs to embrace the opportunity given and do greater good with it, instead of fighting each other for vague things, bringing down our culture and society, giving the world the opportunity to point at us, and say that we were not meant to be freed, because we don't know how to act free.

  7. The movie the great debaters relates to society in the way that when people stand for their right and fight for their purpose and having the support of the society the main goal is achieved. The communication from the leading head to the rest of the society is vital for the primary goal to be obtained. As the saying goes, “You got to do what you have to in order that you can do what you want to do.” In College English we need to communicate with the lecturer so that out opinions and concerns are heard and something is done about it. The lecturer can also use his/her personal experiences to relate to the class for further understanding and or further class discussions.

  8. This movie can relate to English two because of the debates it shows you that for every point you have you should always be able to back it up with evidence and that can relate a lot when writing and essay especially and argumentative essay or when they have you debate in class for certain issues that happen in our every day society.” The Great debaters” can also relate to our society because not everyone stands out for their rights and the people that do are few.

  9. The Great Debaters movie can be related to college English 11 in several aspect because it teaches that in order for someone to make given statement they have to have facts to back up what they write an believe in. The movie also can relate to college English11 because it showed us that proper speech along with an education is a form of liberation.

The movie can also be related to our society today because it showed poverty, crime and discrimination which was presented then and still does now. But do we sit back and pity ourselves the answer is "NO" the change begins with me!

  10. The movie “The Great Debaters, relates to English 11, in my opinion, helps us with verbal speech, how to be good writer and how we can related to different situation. It shows us that at some point we might win some and loose some but at the end loosing does not means giving up. This was seen when, Mr. Tolson, had to hide to meet as a union, but him not giving up and fighting made them succeed. Another good example was when they did not give up in getting a debate with Harvard University. This simple means strive for what you believe in and want from one self.
On the other hand it relates to Belize by many injustices that are happening in our country. The poor is killing the poor. Many poor is suffering, in my opinion there is no law to protect what we believe is wrong. The rich is getting richer and the poor is getting poorer. Our cultures are brought down every day. Belizean need to fight for what they believe is right and as mentioned above loosing is not the end, our morality is what count."AN UNJUST LAW IS NO LAW AT ALL" The people of Texas did not give up; they fought and got the only person that was standing up for them out of jail. When we lose, do we give up or come back stronger?

  11. “The Great Debaters” relates to our Belizean society in that it teaches us that we can stand up for ourselves and prove a point using nothing but words. Simple but unique words can help us fight against corruption, racial hatred and violence on a whole. We've seen that it is no easy task and that we the people must come together and work together for our cause. It also relates to our English course in that it is the foundation to empowering our word selection and the usage of them. It is from here that we will learn to express ourselves and speak properly along with proper posture for our listeners.

  12. I believe “The Great Debaters” is a about finding one’s voice to speak up and about injustices that are occurring. It relates to Belizean society because I believe that our country is at a crossroad of change. Traditionally, we Belizeans are docile, not willing to speak up or fight for change. Now however, we see citizens in San Ignacio rallying together over the murder of Jasmine Lowe and demanding better from the police in properly investigating and capturing her murderer; University of Belize students in Belize City protesting in 2012 for better school grounds at the Education building and numerous other political protests are just few examples of Belizeans standing up and letting their voices be heard to rally for change. The movie also relates to our College English class as it seeks empower students to find their voice and express their thoughts, beliefs through this blog and other mediums.

  13. "The Great Debaters" would relate to College English 2 class by how we can develop our vocal skills, how we can be articulate when speaking, and it also can help us with argumentative writing. This movie can help us become better writers in the sense that we can express our feelings and to exercise our freedom of speech. If we are in tuned with our inner feelings then this would inflict on our writing. the movie also relate to our society because believe it our not we are still slaves. Why you make ask, well because the monarchs rule and if we attend school, church and save our money in the bank then we are slaves under the monarchs its reality just that it is hidden from us. So in the movie it clearly shows that their is racism however they fight against it and we as a society can also fight to make a change. Instead of forever being a developing country we can try to become a developed country. just my thoughts....

  14. This movie relates to college English because we will learn how to write well, speak well, and argue in a debate the proper way. Also education plays big roles from way back then, meaning the more education you have the better your standard of living will be. This movie also relate to the Belizean society in regards to poverty because you see in the movie that the black or colour people to say are the ones suffering in the hands of the white because of poverty. That says a lot and it should not be that way. Education wise also you can relate this movie to Belize for instance you see that almost all the time people from wealthy families are the ones that can afford a descent education while the lower families are suffering from poverty so that leads to not having an education, then that leads to crime and other stuff.

  15. The movie “The Great Debaters” can relate to college English 11 in many different ways. Firstly it gives up a clear idea of how a proper debate should be executed, in regards to structure, order and the level of respect that is displayed throughout its entirety. It also reflects upon the level of research and writing done at the university level; how verbal communication and tone plays significant roles in the delivery of a messages.
In relation to the Belizean society the movie act as a example as it highlights the struggle that was experienced by the debaters at that specific time but didn’t hinder them from moving forward towards their main goal of being successful as a debate team. Clearly there are obstacles along the way to success but with perseverance and hard work it is achievable.

  16. The movie can relate to college English 11 in a way of learning how to use different techniques to say something without using harsh words also that one must learn how certain things are done in other for them to use it. In addition it does relates to our Belizean society showing the poverty that most black people are faced with, how only certain person are treated differently than others maybe by the color of their skin, there beliefs and even their name. Many persons in Belize are faced with some type of racism which can be directly or indirectly. This is why many teens are focused to not continue with their studies and to live on streets and join gangs, and this add to the crime rate which is right heavily affecting everyone.

  17.  Looking back now after watching the movie I now can say that it does related to this English class. It shows us students who are presently taking this class how we can develop our word and turn them into powerful essays and statements.
 It teaches us that no matter how difficult the situation maybe it is always best to stay focus on what we truly desire. The harder we fought the greater our success is. As the great Aristotle says “ the root of education is bitter but the fruit is sweet”
When it comes to our society we easily identify some strategic methods which we can take as to how we address matters in our community and country. How we deal with the situation and how to get our matters to be heard without the use of violence.

  18. The movie relates to our english class as it shows young black people who has strong confidence in themselve bringing across their point with much emphasis, at first it may seem as though it is hard but with much work, dedication and practice we could reach a certain level. It is expected that this english class will teach us how to endulge in strong, respectful and meaningful debates. It teaches that one should have the courage and strength to stand up in what they believes in and must be able to bring it across in a firm but firce way with supporting evidence inorder to convince the minds of others to believe in what you believe in. The movie relates to our belizean society as we are a black community still fighting against racisim and descrimination. Never the less we must develope a strong sense of belonging and prove that we are not less than people with colour and that we can do what ever we put our minds to do dispite our differences.

  19. the movie relates to college English 2 because we can be great writers and thinkers just like in the movie. the movie helps me to appreciate that we need to have goals in life. it also helps the belizean society because we need to be like the kids in the movie have high exceptions and reach for them.

  20. This movie can relate to the Belizean society and college english 2 in many different ways. The movie helps us to develop our debating skills and how to make each point you bring forth count. It relates to the Belizean society also because there is a lot of debates that are happening right now within our country and it helps us to understand the reasons why they say what they say. It also helps us to develop ways in which we can bring across our points strongly and accurately.

  21. The relationship of the movie to college English 11 is enormous. It equips the students with composing and debating skills. The students also acquire new vocabularies and also learn how to use English effectively as portrayed by the debate team. The quotations and how they were used in the movie can also help in forming the students’ thoughts. The students can also acquire essential communication skills through the movie.
More so, it inspires one to be self-confident, hardworking, tolerant and self-motivated. These qualities are very vital for good studentship.
The movie relates to Belizean society in many ways. It reflects some social ills prevalent in the society like poverty and corruption. Some sections of the society had been continuously neglected by successive governments. This had led to a high level of crime especially in the neglected area, the South side of Belize city. The figures from the statistical institute of Belize show that 45% of Belizeans are poor. What happened to all the money that the government receives for poverty alleviation? This shows that the money never gets to the poor because of high level of corruption.
More so, the movie also depicts racism and discrimination which is also prevalent in Belize. I remember when I first came to Belize; A man told me never to make friends with people of certain colors. He also advised me to make friends only with people of some other color. He argued that the former are thieves. But guess who stole my laptop later? A friend from the color I was advised to make friends with. I also remember visiting a mestizo lady with my mestizo friend. This lady told my friend in Spanish that she abhors blacks visiting her home. I was shocked because I did nothing wrong to her.So, you can see that some people are just prejudiced towards others because of the color of their skin. This is reality in Belize. So; the movie reflects certain aspects of life in the Belizean society.

  22. The movie, "The Great Debators" relates to English II by portraying how the students of Wiley College debated against the best American Colleges and proved to themself that they were the best debating team there was. The way it relates is because in English we do alot of discussion and shows us how to give proper respond in regards to the topic given. In my opinion this movie relates to the Belizean Society by showing us that still in todays century we are going through racism and discrimination. It helps us see that we can make it a better society by standing up for ourselves and fight towards a better country.

  23. The movie relates to our English class simply because in the movie the students are also at a University level. Also in our English classes there are areas where we mainly compose and write about certain topics and issues that are affecting our society and as with any institution there will be people who are for or against the given topic/issue, which is where the debating comes in. We might not realize that we are in fact debating when we have simple disagreements in class where people have different views on issues that are discussed.

It relates to our society in that we are living in a third world country and have issues of race, poverty, crime, corruption and abuse as displayed in the movie. We may have these issues in different levels in our country but one way or the other we can all relate to the story that is told by the movie whether we are the black race or the white race as shown.

In some instances the classroom/school setting and the country’s setting both link in several aspects of the movie especially when it comes to people of color or those living in poverty trying to uplift themselves by attending a university and trying to turn themselves into someone that people can consider a role model of our society and on the other hand, at the same time having to deal with the issues that we are faced with everyday and trying to overcome them in a sane manner.

  24. The movie relates to College English 2 because everybody is entitle to their own opinion however, when producing your information you should do so with confidence to show that you really stand for what you''re saying.

It relates to our society because as we all know, there groups around that are fighting for respect and they do so even if it cost emotionally.

  25. It relates in a lot of ways but for me the most important aspect is the racism. You need to have a good education or be a good friend of politicians so as to achieve what you want. For the class is how students can be prepared to debate and voice up their opinions to be heard. Once you want something it can be accomplished with hard working and dedication.

  26. the "great debaters movie" depends a lot on college English II in a way as how to improve in our knowledge because upon debating in a point strengthens your way of thinking and analyzing. it depends to the Belizean society in a way as us belizean we tend to take things for granteed.

  27. This movie has shown me that my college English 2 class is very much related. The movie talks about many people trying out for the debate team but only four was chosen. So my class is an example how hard work have brought us to this point. Also that my class well face many issues, like in the movie, but with right choices and team work we will pass. There is also a relationship with the movie to our society. Belizean people are still fighting with each other because of skin color and gang color. You can also see racism with how the black are all ways killing and rubbing the Chinese people. So this movie completely relates to us.

  28. The great debater is a brilliant and marvelous movie, a movie that everyone should see. It’s both inspirational and heartwarming to see a group of young African Americans or Negros as they were called, stand up and prove to America that intelligence isn't based on the color of your skin or the quality of your hair but by the hard work and effort you put into something. Today in the world and in our jewel Belize we are still faced with these problems not so much as before but we still are. Foreigners would come to our country only to take away the jobs from our Belizean people. a Belizean with a bachelors degree and a American with a bachelor’s degree applies for a job in the business sector in Belize city, who do you think will get the job? The American. It has been proven that foreigners see our jewel as a gold mine and they continue to come in taking away job opportunities from our Belizean people. This gives the Belizean people no hope, no sense of pride, no future. It allows them to all think alike, that they are worthless, they value nothing but to settle for what they have and isn’t supposed to move from there or get anything more, the white people in this movie believed that black people valued nothing that they were just plagues and harassing trying to be equal as them. In Belize it’s the same the rich believe that there in a total different standard from the poorer class people that they’re not equal but better than us. Which is sad and a shame. I believe the movie relates to college English because the persons on the debate team had to have a wide vocabulary, they had to be a fluent reader and had to research and write a lot. In college English I believe we will do the stated activities and even more to develop our English Grammar skills.

  29.  The movie "The Great Debaters" is very educational an has alot of information related to our english class simply because it helps to educate young individual about past, present and future historical life style and what are the changes that have, will and should be made in order to live an equal fare lifestyle of the younger generation.
 For us as Belizeans it speaks a lot about the way our ancestors have live in the past with such an unequal way of treating one and other for example in the time of slavery, our ancestor have battle through many different up stickles so that we can live a better lifestyle and yet we don’t take the advantage of continue on making the change we still keep on committing these grievous acts on a daily basis making headlines on the news of killing each other, then I ask the question “why can’t we come together and live in peace and not in peace’s”.
 Furthermore as students at the university level we should be able to make that great change of uniting with each other to make Belize a safer place for all as it take those youngsters in the movie “The Great Debaters” because really and truly it was left up to the debate team from Wily College to spread the word that we all deserve equal rights.

  30. The movie “Great Debaters” relates to Belize society because this movie is talking about the early 90’s in United States at that time the whites weren't accept blacks or they thought they were better than the blacks. So as Belize, Belize has also been colonized by the whites and the blacks were treated as bad as well. Therefore, we need to fight for ourselves and earn our rights in order to show others that we have the rights to deserve what others have. In other hand, this movie relates to English class because in the movie the students are practicing how to speak fluently and how to make others can understand what you want to deliver to your audiences.

  32. Firstly, the movie the Great Debaters relates to our College English class II, held at the University of Belize, at 5:30-6:45 pm. Because we as students like debating against each other when there is an excellent topic that everyone loves talking about. We the students of that College English II class also relates to the movie because we debate against each other and the students in the movie debates against other schools, but the subjects that we debate about is basically the same. For an example ‘racism’ is a topic we mostly debate against. Secondly, the movie also relates to our country Belize, because in our country we still have individuals being racist.

  33. the movie,"the great debaters"relates to our class eng2 and the society of Belize in various ways.
like, the movie teaches us that hardwork, dedication, willingness, confidence, team work could bring victory.so, we know that once we try hard, we can ofcourse get a good grade! :)
and about relating to our Belize society, Belize was also colonised by whites and back then "Black people" were also treated bad.which teaches us not to be racist as we can still notice the racism in our country towards other different cultures.

  34. The movie “the great debater’s” relates to college English II because they both serve as informative examples as to how we can become aware of current issues in our community. It relates to the Belizean society because what happened back then is still prevalent in this era, we are still faced with racism each and every day. People are trying to move forward in society and uplift themselves but we are constantly faced with harsh oppression at the hand of our own.

  35. The purpose of the exercise is to have a better understanding that noting comes easy in life. Living it self is a challenge and to become someone is even a greater challenge. It also shows us that the year 1935 in America is no deferent that today 2013 Belize, there is still a racial segregation, and also the present of slavery. There is just one thing the nation leaders are not enslaving us it’s us our self that is doing so. If in that time was there was a control and submission by leader and people, and the broke free from it why now as free people we can’t do so from our self?
