In my opinion the main purpose of this exercise, is to show us how we can be excellent student ,all of us can make a difference in our country and society. If we only allow ourself to bring out our inner greatness and the desire to exceed to our full potential that was always embeded inside us. It also shows how far we have come in history that if our ancestors can make it back then,with all the racial discrimination and violence. Now in our time which is much bettter than then we have the upper hand to do much better because we are able to obtain a higher education without any racial discrimiation to hinder us.
The main purpose of this activity is to show us that we can excel in greatness without discrimination and racism. dont let racism and discrimination keep you from getting what needed to be done. especially for our younger children growing up. it shows us that they can be successful in what ever they are struggling and other challenges that arise.
In my point of view the main purpose of watching the video is to show and guide us how to be good and excellent students in life and society. Also how we can overcome the difference of people, no matter sex, race or culture. We should be proud of what we are and leave discrimination and racism away from us and our life.
After watching the movie, my conclusion as to the purpose of this activity,was simply to have young and old people appreciate the freedom that we now have. Also to give us inner motivation to not be afraid to stand up for our rights, and to let our voices be heard. The Great Debaters, a movie written based on the racial division existing in the 1930’s where the Jim Crow laws were very enforced and whereby the back people were not allowed to be walking, or even use the same restrooms as the white people. The Wiley College a college where black attended, and where a former educator of the institution Mr. Tolson volunteered to fully equip the debating team consisting of Mr. Farmer, Mr. Lowe, and Ms. Brooke. These young people were preparing to debate and fight for their rights as people of the nation. They went through many challenges, debated with many teams and finally obtained their main objective to obtain their rights by debating the Harvard University. The main purpose of the activity is to learn on how to establish oral communication with the lecturer as Mr. Tolson did with the team. Relating with the students, talking to the students, listening to the students and all other things are the things the lecturer should do as Mr. Tolson did. Communication is vital for the classes as it was for Mr. Tolson and the team to obtain their objective. Having in class debates would help us to build confidence and prepare for anything that might come up in the class as the course proceeds to the end.
The purpose of the activity was to show people what it was like back in the days, for them to appreciate that now many things have changed for example the fact that” blacks” and “whites” go to the same schools now and back in the days that was a huge problem . This activity also illustrates that if we fight for what we want we can excel in many ways for example the teenagers fought for their right in the entire movie and at the end of the movie they were recognize ever were and also won the last debate which was the most important one.

A very good example of this was when Samantha was debating with University of Oklahoma, probing the question, “when will they day be that Negros can attend an college institution with black and white", her action of stamping her feet, and letting the audience know that enough is enough and that day will be today. This relates to our everyday life, it might not necessarily be the color of your skins, but the wealthy class and poor people in our country. Only a certain level of people in our society can really value good education as it is very expensive. Many people in today’s society are dropping out of school for this same reason, they do not have the financial help to sustain their education. Making a stand and making certain changes can alleviate these problems such as what the Debaters of Wiley College did.
The purpose of this activity I believe is to show us the power of our words and that when we work dedicated and together we can achieve any of our goals. It gives us a sense to never give up and to keep on working until we achieve.
Summary: “The Great Debaters” takes us back to a time filled with racial discrimination and hatred. A time where a man, woman or child can be killed (lynched) and negated from simple rights such as attending a university just because of the colour of their skin. They live in fear and constant torture of the whites and their racial crime against them. Luckily that within all this Mr. Melvin B. Tolson is instructing and molding the debate team of a black school to use their words and voices to be heard and seen. They are fighting their way up debating against other black schools succeeding to a point where they get to debate against white schools and even made it all the way to Harvard University. They take personal encounters and the struggles they live because of being and apply it to their words. “You have to do what you have to do in order to do what you want do”, very wise words from the movie. These students went in heart and soul and showed others that they are no different from rights and deserve the right of equality with the whites. In the end, the team won against the debate team of Harvard and went on to be the first black debate team to do so. The movie proves to us that “our words are our weapons” and that we are all the same no matter what.

The movie gives clear examples of huge obstacles that was overcome by this debating team; hence showing us that those challenges that we are facing now as students or even as individuals are never too big to overcome.

And lastly that we can overcome any obstacles we are faced with because we come from a strong background.
The use of words and the magnitude that comes along with it. The use of words is actually greater than ones actions. It is how we respond to different situations is what truly defines us as a person. If we respond to situations in a professional and organize manner we are more likely to receive better results. Determination comes with success. In order for us to reach where we want to go and achieve our goals we must be determine to overcome all the obstacles that may come along in order gain our success. It’s not about settling for the minimum but, to be persistent to go beyond that settlement.

It now shows me that if a small team can accomplish such great success without the force of violence, we as a great nation can do just the same. If we have the strength of word to use on our enemy why not use it for a purpose with determination we might just be successful for something worthwhile.

Today it’s so easy the doors are open education is there to take, to get, but we all babble about money and about the government. Yes the government is supposed to help us but if you truly want something, work for it, the reward will be much sweeter. Don’t complain like the common man it’s in our nature to wine and complain about things but it will never do any good. A wise lady one that I love dearly always told me son, the heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night. ReplyDeleteI believe that the main purpose of watching the movie as a part of our English course was to open our minds and hearts to realize that we can do anything that we put our all into. Even though we might be looked down upon as a third world country, we can be as successful as other countries that have economic standards that are far better than ours. We can learn from the movie that as long as we believe in ourselves and keep pushing to reach the top of the ladder, no one can take away our intelligence at the end of the day.
ReplyDeleteWe can also learn from the movie, the way to speak and write properly especially when arguing an important point or writing about an important topic. Through the movie, we learn that success does not come easily but as long as we believe in ourselves and work hard at any given task we can achieve the ultimate success, which is our dignity and education.

The purpose of the movie is to educate young individual about past, present and future historical life style and what are the changes that have, will and should be made in order to live an equal fare lifestyle of the younger generation,and also help us to understand the logic of life.
I believe that the exercise is to open our eyes and minds, to let us see that our brothers didn’t have a walk in the park to have all of us sitting here in a class room today, but they had to fight, strive, work for what they wanted and what they believed in. Many obstacles came in the way but that never kept them down they were persistent, dedicated and believed that one day we all were going to be one. We must look at this take it into consideration and learn. Black people back in the day fought and many died to be treated equally and to be educated as equals as well. Today it’s so easy the doors are open education is there to take, to get, but we all babble about money and about the government. Yes the government is supposed to help us but if you truly want something, work for it, the reward will be much sweeter. Don’t complain like the common man it’s in our nature to wine and complain about things but it will never do any good. A wise lady one that I love dearly always told me son, the heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night. Think about that!
ReplyDeleteThe main purpose of this activity is to motivate the students and teach us how to express ourselves. Also, this movie tells us how to overcome the current situation and defeat our opponents through the words. Most important thing is that this movie gives us the confidences to face some of the challenges that will happen in our future.
ReplyDeleteTo me the purpose of this activity is to show us that not only Belize has racism controlling many factors in our day to day living. Just as how done four young people fight for the rite to go to school, our U.B government is fighting for the government of Belize to help pay some off our education bill. Which they are taking back from us!!!!! But yet they have money to buy new vehicles for all G.O.B ”big fish” if u may call them so.
ReplyDeleteI think that the purpose of the movie the great debater is to show the viewers that if you want to gain success in life you need to work really hard to get what you want to achieve. For an example; in the movie it shows how hard those students studied, and they didn’t study alone, they all studied together. Therefore, while studying together they learned much more history in which they didn’t know. In conclusion, the main purpose of the movie the Great Debaters, is when working together as a team you can gain success because you get a lot of help along the way from your fellow teammates. In conclusion the main purpose of watching this movie to show and also prove to us how successful we can be in life if we don’t give. The movie also shows how life was so racist back in the days.
ReplyDeletethe purpose of the activity in my point of view is, to teach us how to achieve your rights,to work hard,to be confident about your victory,team work advantages.moreover, appreciate others culture and their practises.the movie teaches us how to be fair.to be self confident.altough our nation could be looked upon as a third world coun try now,but once we all keep trying together,we can definately make a better nation someday.
